Ella in one paragraph
Ella sits at 1,041 metres in a notch in the mountain wall, so on a clear morning you can see the sea 60 kilometres away through Ella Gap. It became a backpacker town, then a wedding-photo town, and is now busy enough that timing matters: walk Little Adam’s Peak at 6am and Nine Arch Bridge before 8, and the rest of the day is yours for tea estates, waterfalls and a very good local food scene.

Ella — your questions
How do we photograph a train on Nine Arch Bridge?
Trains cross roughly at 6:50, 9:20, 11:30, 14:00 and 17:20, though times drift. Arrive twenty minutes early and stand on the tea-field side for the classic angle.
Ella Rock or Little Adam's Peak?
Little Adam’s Peak is 45 minutes on a clear path and suits everyone. Ella Rock is two to three hours, poorly signed and worth taking a guide for.
Is the train from Kandy really that good?
The Nanu Oya to Ella section is the best of it, tea terraces, tunnels and cloud forest. The full Kandy to Ella run takes seven hours; most of our guests do the three-hour section.
